Ours is a School of limitless possibility, where curiosity is rewarded with discovery and connections—between disciplines, between people, between questions old and new—open new opportunities, every day, for our academic mission to make the world better and for our understanding of it to deepen.

In this annual report, you will learn more about the people and resources that enable this mission. In fiscal year 2023, we invested in sustaining the faculty, extending nearly 40 offers to welcome new perspectives, new academic areas, and new learning opportunities for our students. From a position of good financial health, we saw our activities return to prepandemic levels, a welcome confirmation of what we can already feel on campus. And rooted in our faculty-driven FAS strategic planning process, we are focused on the future, digging into the structures and resources that will secure our academic excellence for the long term.

Having begun my deanship on August 1, I am only a beneficiary of the considerable achievements outlined in this report, but it highlights why I enter into this role with such profound gratitude—for the leadership of my predecessor, the wisdom and hard work of our faculty and researchers, for the insight and dedication of our staff, and the inspiring commitment of our alumni. Because of them, the FAS is strong and our mission is vibrant. I am humbled by the honor to lead this School that has meant so much to me, and filled with hope and excitement for what this faculty will achieve in the months and years ahead.

Spotlights

In August, the FAS faculty came together for the third and final year of the FAS Strategic Planning project to begin a year of exploring what has been learned during the first two years of planning and discussing opportunities for change with the goal of developing a forward-looking vision for excellence in its academic communities.

Faculty Trends

This report highlights key trends among the faculty, with special attention to its size, composition (by appointment type), growth patterns, diversity, and promotion rates. We also describe new policies, orientations, professional development programming, and coaching programs to support faculty. Additionally, support for nonladder faculty and postdoctoral fellows, including childcare support and postdoc salaries, was expanded.
